I keep getting this metadata error. Once after cropping and white point. And then again after converting my negatives. I followed the instructions to update DNG preview and metadata. And then it told me to read metadata. I did that and then converted negatives and then it’s back again?
I’m new to this. this is actually my first roll of scans and while I’m learning a lot this is the one thing I got nothing for

Hi! Just closing the loop on this since it was handled one on one.

If anyone else has this issue after using the “File \> Plugin Extras \> Update Vuescan/Silverfast DNG” utility, make sure you are following the instructions to run “Photo \> Read Metadata From File” after running the utility.

The issue here I believe was that the user ran “Update DNG Preview and Metadata” after running the utility. Doing that will result in this error.

Thanks!

I get this error too. Although yesterday I only did one photo conversion at a time and didn’t see the error. It seemed to correlate with the upgrade of the newest version of LRC.

Hi,
I’m getting this error as well, since updating to the latest version. I’m not sure what to do though since I’m not using Vuescan / Silverfast or DNG. And it only seems to happen when I convert in batches, though it doesn’t happen to every single image in a batch (though it does happen to most of them). If I go through and click each one afterward it will export the metadata fine. Are there any other solutions to this?

Thanks,

Miles

Hi @MilesS and @hugh

Thanks for letting me know… I’m not sure what would be causing this and I haven’t been able to replicate the issue on my system yet (MacOS 10.15.7, LrC 11.0).

It’s helpful to know that this seems to happen only in batch mode.

If you find any more clues as to why it happens in some instances but not others, it would be very helpful to know!

It would also be helpful to know more about your systems, so I can see if perhaps it is a system-specific issue. If you have a second, could you please go to “Help \> System Info” in Lightroom, and then copy/paste the entire top section down to the plugin info? That would be great to know!

Thanks!
-Nate

Hello:

I just posted a listing about this issue. I get this error whether I convert in a batch, or one negative at a time. It occurs in most, but not all instances of negative conversion.

Here’s a copy of my posting:

After converting negatives with NLP v2.3 in Lightroom Classic V11.1, each converted negative displays an exclamation mark in the upper right corner. When I click on it, the message “There was an unknown error while writing metadata to this photo. Retry” My options are: “Retry Metadata export” or “Import Settings from Disk”. I chose the “Retry” option, which seems to take care of the issue. But, this is time consuming because I have to do this for every negative converted y NLP. This began after I upgraded to NLP 2.3.

Do you have any recommendations to correct this issue?

Thank you,
Steve

Thanks @steve1

I’m still looking into this and will hopefully have a fix soon.

In the meantime, if you experience this, you may be able to save time by selecting all of the images at once that display that metadata error message, and then clicking the message. It should let you fix all of the images at once (rather than one by one).

Thanks for reaching out, Nick. One additional thing I hadn’t mentioned: the Lightroom photos are a network drive. Lightroom and it’s associated catalog files are on the iMac drive.
