From the posts that I’ve read it appears that the most common opinion is that if you use the ES-2 you don’t capture rebate that you need to set white balance before running NLP.
I saw one post that suggested extending the ES-2 to get a wider view. I tried that and did get a wider view but no rebate. If someone was able to use this and capture rebate I’d love to see an example.
The only thing I’ve come up with is this:
Before starting to scan a roll, intentionally position the film so that some rebate shows and set white balance for the whole roll by recording the Temp and Tint (or copy in LR), then proceed with capturing the photo frames.
That’ll work though, in fact I thought that was the standard practice for the ES-2 and the JJC copy. I don’t think that the ‘wider view’, i.e. reducing the magnification to get more room around the frame, was ever going to achieve any improvement in that respect but your workaround looks fine. The Valoi easy35 does show rebate but that’s another matter.
I use the Nikon ES-2 for all my film scanning. I start each roll scanning the unexposed part before the first picture, then I scan the rest of the roll. When uploaded to Lightroom I set the White Balance of the whole roll according to the first blank picture I get (the unexposed part), using the WB dropper. That technique also allows me to mark the beginning of each roll when I scan several rolls in one batch.
