Inconsistent between similar images on same roll

using NLP v 3.1.1 in Lightroom Classic. negatives shot with Lumix S1 as raw files, fixed iso, aperture and color temp. no variations in camera between “scans”.

is anyone else having inconsistencies between images where lighting and scenes are the same? I sample the film edge in LR to set the color temp, crop to inside the film edges and then go into NLP and do conversion. I can never get the images to all match each other. even if I copy the settings in NLP or do batch processing. what am I doing wrong! help!

When posting about Image Conversion Issues, please include the following information:

  1. Which version of Negative Lab Pro are you using?

  2. If using DSLR scanning, please include: 1) camera make/model, 2) lens make/model, 3) light source make/model

  3. If using film scanner, please include: 1) scanner make/model, 2) software used for scanning, 3) settings used for scanning

  4. Please add the conversion you are having difficulty with, along with a short description of what you are seeing wrong with it.

  5. It’s not required, but it’s very helpful if you can provide a link to the original RAW or TIFF negative before conversion. If you don’t want to share this file publicly, you can also email it to me at nate@natephotographic.com

As noted elsewhere, NLP analyses the negative(s) and converts along the respective content. Even slight differences can produce different conversions which are to be considered starting points for further processing.

Expecting identical results from different negatives is a very common misconception.

Read the guide, you can access it with the link given in the black header of the page.

Other than that, you might want to try different colour models and pre-saturation levels and do the same with and without roll analysis. If you proceed systematically, the way to the preferred starting point can be simplified.

Example:

  • Create physical images of a typical negative - one for each colour model
  • Create, for each physical copy, virtual copies - one for each level of pre-saturation
  • Convert with the respective settings
  • Check results

Caveat

  • What you’ll find can be saved as a preset, but it might not be useful for all the other images you will want to convert. I know that this doesn’t sound nice, but it’s good practice to accept it.
