So I am looking for a scanning workflow using the Protek 8300 scanner - Silverfast - NLP (as a dng file), that will give me the most neutral results preserving the film character as close as possible. Particularly the Kodak vision3 500T, 50T and 250D filmstocks.
These are motion picture 35mm color negatives respooled for photo cameras.
The reason I’m doing this is to use the scanned test stills for film emulation for digital footage (using a color chart).
What would be the most “neutral” settings for NLP that would alter the character in the least way?
The most neutral editing preset would be “NLP - Neutral.”
I would also recommend using Roll Analysis (make sure you are not mixing film types), and set the “Roll Process” to “Darkroom.” With this setting, NLP will analyze the characteristics of the entire roll to determine a single, constant color multiplier, and with the Darkroom roll process it will also set a single dynamic range for the entire roll (and not optimize the dynamic range of each shot individually). I find this setting is especially satisfying with Cine films and creates moodier results with more breathing room.
Thanks much for the tip. This makes sense. I tried setting the roll process to darkroom, but it was not enabled. I am scanning DNG files (using the Vuescan/SF DNG source). Would you think that would be an issue?
