Negative Lab Pro v3.0 - The Next Level of Film Processing

I finally got to use roll analysis because I have a group of negatives for which the rendition of a correct tone and hue of blue is particularly desired, and I read Nate’s comment that blue skies can emerge better with roll analysis. I selected only 4 photos to be “the roll” for this test and implemented the procedure exactly according to Nate’s guidance here. I’m pleased to say the results are astoundingly good - in particular skies and water have much more believable colour “out of the box”, which beforehand I could only achieve with some editing to reduce Cyan appearance. So kudos to “roll analysis” - it’s very good. I shall make more use of it.

Wow that sounds promising! Just about to pospone dinner and re-scan my roll from Ireland. The green Island threw all my colors off so hard (because everything there is green LOL). Let’s see how roll analysis will do.

Just some questions:

  • do the images inside the roll need to be similar to show good results (e.g. just photos containing lots of green from Ireland)?
  • can I leave auto WB in the camera settings or should that be fixed, as the exposure needs to be?
  • General question in terms of color in a roll: How can people say things like “i like Portra 400’s colors”. In my scans, I cannot find the characteristics of the film stocks used… My Portra 400 looks different in every roll… :frowning:

Roll analysis, as far as I understand it, is meant to collect the widest possible variation of hues and tones recorded on the film. If each capture is digitised with individual settings, variations diminish and roll analysis can’t deliver its full potential. Therefore, all things exposure should remain unchanged…and this includes white balance.

It was said in May that Version 3.1 would be updated. It’s almost 2025 now. Are there any update plans? Version 3.1? Or Version 4.0?

Just posted an updated announcement on v3.1 with more details and first look at samples.

I was impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton (I live in St Petersburg, Florida), and we’re still in the process of trying to get back to normal, so this has taken way longer than I hoped.

Thanks everyone for you patience!
