Frontier SP-3000 Lens for DSLR scanning

Hello!

Has anyone tried using a lens from the Frontier SP-3000 for DSLR scanning? There’s a completely worn-out scanner at a local lab nearby, and I could buy the lens from it. Is it worth it? I searched this forum and Google, but I couldn’t find any reviews or experiences using this lens for scanning with a camera.

Can anyone advise if it’s worth it?

There is a post about this lens on the Facebook forum “Digitizing film with a digital camera”, if you join it this is the link:

There are some useful photos but it seems that there is nothing on the lens to say what it is, someone suggested that it might be a rebadged Magnagon f4.5 but there’s no evidence given for that. The user found it “fantastic for APS-C” for both 35mm and 120. It seems it has a focal length of around 40mm and a fixed aperture of somewhere around f2.8 - 3.5, so shallow depth of field. If the focal length really is 40mm then its not going to be a Magnagon. The OP mounted the assembly to a Nikon adapter plate with the aid of hot glue, I can’t tell from the photos how it was focused.

Thank you for your answer! I didn’t know about this FB forum, but now I see that it is really useful place!

As for the lens, I’m not entirely sure. I have a full-frame camera, and I’m not certain if the sharpness at the edges of the frame will be sufficient.

I hope someone with more experience can provide some insight

Yes, there is a lot on that forum, and going back some years, a mine of information if you can find it. It would be good to know the size of the sensor inside the SP-3000, if that is listed anywhere.

I’ve found it! It’s approximately the size of an APS-C sensor. The measurements are provided in this post Redirecting...

so, no use for me, i guess

Excellent work, that forum has so much good information but if it’s buried in a thread it can be very hard to find.

That does look as if it would be great on an APS-C camera, and I guess not so great on full frame. Still time for someone who has used one to chime in though.
