I was using a V600 with SilverFast for several months. I took a break, and for some reason in the last few months SilverFast has stopped working with my scanner about half the time. I know that VueScan is very popular, but my research has indicated it yields somewhat lower image quality compared to SilverFast. If I’m going to be using Lightroom and NLP either way, is there really any difference in image quality between the two programs?
It should be possible to get equally good image quality out of VueScan vs Silverfast… the biggest differences would be 1) Scratch and Dust removal (which anecdotally seems better in Silverfast) and 2) Sharpening (which I don’t believe is applied in the Vuescan workflow, but may be applied in the Silverfast workflow). But at least with sharpening, it is possible (and probably better) to adjust sharpening later in the workflow.
