Hey, im new to film photography as well as NLP, i recently got my film developed and scanned the film myself, its my first ever scan so it was probably not the best, there is still improvements for me to do. I was looking at some of the pictures in lightroom after converting using NLP and some look suspicious, is this just my bad scanning job or are these light leaks?
Mind you, not all pictues look like this, most look completely fine, just with a few of my scanning errors. I can post a few more if needed, just tell me.
Also helpful if you could post the unconverted scan of that negative, a screenshot would be fine. It’s most likely caused by some kind of uneveness in your light source which could indeed be vignetting but could be other things as well. This type of issue always affects under-exposed/thin negatives the most so that could explain why many seem unaffected.
Here’s some scans on my gdrive. They arent the best, because i didnt realise you gotta include a bit of the film border and stuff but maybe this can give a clearer picture? If not just tell me. I did not include the one with people in it because i dont wanna upload people who dont wanna be uploaded online.
The orange/light corners definitely look like lens vignetting, so you could try using the flat field correction feature in LR. It’s a little tedious, but generally works. The other option is to try another lens, which may or not need FFC.
If you want a cheap lens that does not need FFC (in my experience) the Nikon 55/2.8 Micro Nikkor is almost as good as it gets.
take-94 silo landscape
Not very sharp and some falloff on right side and more so on left side. Looks like a slightly de-centered lens and a capture taken through a window. Converted image gets a dreamy old style, okay for those who like “character”
take-97 silo portrait
This definitely looks like taken through a window … but as shown in an earlier post, the flare extends into the perforated base. I suppose there was an issue with that film not being shielded from light during any of its steps until developed. Another “character” image.
I marked the most problematic areas. Assuming that you took all “scans” under very similar conditions (basically in a very dark room and the same camera and lens) i must conclude that what you show is what you have: photos with qualities you’ll have to deal with and for sanity sake, I propose to target “artistic” rendering if you can’t get “technical perfection”. If your aim is the latter, review your gear, process and technique, or live happily ever after with what will be a testimony rather than sterile reproduction.
