Grass turned out yellow

Hi all. I recently scanned some negatives of Santa color 100 film roll and in some images the grass turned out completely yellow. It was not completely green but for sure not as yellow as the conversion shows.

I tried different conversion options, from Noritsu to basic but nothing changed.

NLP version: 3.1.1

Camera: Leica SL 601 with Sigma 70 macro art

Light source: Cinestill (don’t know the exact model name, it is the one in Valoi easy 120).

Is it possible that this is really, more or less, how the grass looked when the photo was taken? To me it looks like the grass was recently cut during a dry summer, and most of the yellow/brown that you see is the dead grass that’s been cut, and the grass underneath is also pale and dry from the weather. I often feel like NLP pushes greens toward yellows, but because there is plenty of greenery in the background of this photo, I’m inclined to think that it’s pretty close to accurate to real life.

Do you have another photo of this scene or a print that shows this patch of grass being greener? Here’s my conversion, FWIW.

@outback , the shirt looks white, so the overall balance seems okay.

The shadow under the tree is a bit too green for my taste, but it hints at the possibility that the grass might have been greener. The sun stands high and close to noon lighting does not do much good to dry grass… Moreover, NLP is not a silver bullet imo, but a way to quickly get a good starting point.

Santa Color is “yielding results with punchy reds and lush greens” and I suppose that the dry green of the foreground is pushed towards red by Santa. After all, this film is not intended for true-to-life colour rendition.

You can try to make the grass look different by means of NLP’s 2nd tab tools, but it’s probably easier to work on a positive copy and with a local adjustment.

@outback , welcome to the forum and NegativeLab Pro.

BTW, I like the image as it is shown by @finn_l . I’d leave the grass as is, but would want to desaturate the shadow under the tree. Result wouldn’t be like much of Santa though

Many thanks for helping. Definitely the grass was not like it appears here. Not green like the one in the background but not as yellow as it is. Maybe it is due to the film roll or maybe the developer a bit old (I opened it 1 month ago and developed 12 rolls with it).
