Regarding the friction of the focus ring on the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art lens

Hello,

After reading various discussions about the sharpness of the Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM and the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro, I decided to purchase the 105mm macro lens again.

However, the focus ring on this copy feels too smooth, with very little resistance or friction.
Because of that, it feels a bit uneasy to rest my hand on the focus ring, as it might move unintentionally.
I’m wondering if other users of the 105mm DG DN Macro experience the same behavior with their lenses.
Thanks.

I don’t have that lens so excuse me if what I say is not possible but I’d be inclined to tape it up to give the correct magnification and then move the camera and lens together on a macro rail. It’s much more precise and the focus snaps in and out much more positively, especially at or around 1:1.

That’s a very helpful tip—thank you. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’d like to confirm whether this new lens is functioning normally; otherwise, I’m considering exchanging it.

I do my digitalization with this lense. I have the E mount version and I use Sony’s IEDT to do remote shooting and I can control the MF in the software, avoiding unneccessary contact with my camera rig.

To me, I don’t enjoy the manual focus of this lense and I would prefer a bit longer travel for precise MF.

Thank you. Anyway, how is the focus ring on your lens? Is it overly smooth?

To me, the friction is decent. It feels similar to my 14 gm, and my 20-70G is way smoother than my 105 macro.

Thank you for letting me know.
