Very excited about this as I too am abandoning Adobe. Not so much over price, but just not a fan of Lightroom in general. I prefer DxO Photolab. I only used LRC for Negative Lab Pro.

I’m curious to know if the new standalone software is gonna have flat field correction and if it’s gonna work with other film carriers such as the filmomat auto 35 auto carrier. When I use that and bring the raw dng files into Lightroom and convert them with negative Lab Pro I get really bad vignetting. Will the standalone software fix that?

Yes, it will be fantastic for regular digital photos, with full support of raw camera profiles (DCP), and very good raw demosaicing (comparable to Lightroom, with noticeable improvements for Fuji Xtrans sensors). Of course, the focus is still film.
Yes, full support for RGB light sources. And BIG improvements on regular light sources too.
Owners of the full v3 license of the plugin will receive $100 off the standalone version. Also, you will be able to port over your existing edits from Lightroom over to the standalone version. So there is no reason to wait if you need to use the plugin now. With that said, some of the improvements in the standalone will probably make you want to re-edit your work!

You will have the option to do either one time purchase (of the current major version) or monthly subscription.
I may also add an “all versions forever” one-time purchase option if there is any interest.
Yes. A few added features already built-in:
1) The ability to control the color space of the inversion. You can keep the inversion in Melissa RGB (like LrC) or use a RA4 or 2383 Cine inversion space. I may add more spaces (or give users the ability to define their own). It’s really fun to play with, especially with massive speed improvements on the inversion in the standalone. Examples below.
2) Grain-Aware RAW De-Mosaicing. Existing algorithms for raw de-mosaicers can be thrown off by film grain, and this is hard to fix later in the pipeline.
3) Better Color Pickers. The process for this in the current plugin is very clunky, just based on what I can do in the Lightroom SDK, so it’s great to have proper color pickers.
Of course, the flip side is that there will still be some things that Lightroom Classic has that the standalone won’t have (yet).

The RA4 inversion space feels much more like print with very true neutrals. That said, I still really like the vibrant look of Melissa here.

Thanks Nate, that’s interesting - or should I better say, “of interest”. Perhaps I should wait till it becomes available and see what it does when the time comes, but I’ll ask several questions anyhow, but if you would prefer to defer the info till the time comes, just say so, that’s OK.
(1) The key one in my mind is that being a stand alone, can the output be an inverted raw file, or must one select a pixel-based output format such as TIFF, JPEG, etc?
(2) Closely associated with (1), given LR has features NLP won’t have, what can you say at this time about NLP/LR integration, and will LR’s feature set become any more usable on output from the stand-alone than they are with the plugin, which is pretty limited unless one converts to say TIFF?
(3) Maybe you’ve mentioned this already - I don’t recall - roughly when do you expect to offer the first stand-alone version?
This is very very tricky to do in a way that is useful. I have an idea here that I haven’t seen anyone else do… not sure it will make it into v1, but stay tuned!
The goal is that there is no need for external software… you can fully manage your catalog and do al your edits non-destructively inside NLP. But as an example, I probably won’t have a full HSL editing controls at launch (though I plan to add it). If you still want to integrate a Lightroom workflow with the standalone NLP, at the very least you can do this with TIFF exports (and potentially some kind of pre-baked inverted RAW).
I’ve made a ton of progress on the core, but still have a lot of little things to do and tidy up. It will absolutely be out before Black Friday this year.
OK that would work. I ask because I make extensive use of Lightroom’s masking tools and without having seen what you are cooking-up, I’d be pleasantly surprised if you will be having all that kind of masking and AI-based repair capability in NLP. Within LR one can use all those tools on both raw and rendered files, so from that perspective working on an exported TIFF is fine. The main advantage of having a positive raw is that it can be repurposed using one resampling. If one is working from a TIFF which already has a fixed resolution, to render it into another resolution one is resampling rendered pixel data. The algorithms are very good these days for doing that, so probably no big deal, within reason, but there is always just that little bit extra comfort working that process starting from raw. Does that make technical sense still these days?

This is looking great Nate! Long time NLP user and I’ve recently been working on reverse-engineering the Nikon Coolscan wire protocol to write modern drivers and basically am just missing the final inversion step in Linux. This will probably be a day one purchase for me. I’ve been mucking with the likes of NegPy but frankly it is too buggy and slow. Plus it’s all vibe coded which leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Sounds wonderful! If I may suggest - release stable version -even if some features not yet available - to start getting feedback from users. I suspect you may be spending 90% of your time on the features 90% of users will never use ;-). Also having software in the wild will help flash out issues you never thought possible. On the other side: I typically renew my Lightroom subscription on Black Friday when it’s 50% off for few days. For people who want part with Adobe subscription they keep only to host NLP, early standalone release will give them piece of mind that they no longer need to hunt for Adobe discounts.
