NLP v3.1.1 crashes when applying roll analysis for a batch

MacOS Sequoia 15.5
Lightroom Classic 14.4
NLP v3.1.1

Hey I’d like to ask why the NLP crashes and flashes when I click “convert” in roll analysis mode. The pictures remain unconverted and stop at the border buffer preview as if they are cropped. It functions well if I unselect “roll analysis”. This problem appears both for color negative and B&W modes.
I tried restarting, reinstalling both LrC and NLP. The bug stays the same.

Welcome to the forum @maoron

According to some information posted by @nate, there is something of an issue that Adobe has to deal with. Until this has been done, a few workarounds can help. Converting too many images can cause crashes, but that does not seem to be your usual workload (judging from the screen you added)

A few hints might help you find more stable ground for your work

  • Roll Analysis is meant for colour negative film. Use RA if your negatives aren’t well exposed, i.e. the histograms are narrow and tend to linger at left or right of the Histogram area. Using RA on 2 B&W negatives should not harm, but it most probably doesn’t help either. Leave RA off when you convert B&W negatives.
  • Border Buffer can make things easier, e.g. if you leave your images un-cropped or if there are large areas of high density near the negative’s edges. Enabling BB preview can help to learn how wide a certain BB value is, but calculating the previews takes some time, but has no effect on the conversion (BB value acts on conversion, BB Preview switch does not). If you imagine a thirds grid, you can imagine the effect of a BB setting. A BB setting of 15% corresponds to not quite half of the outer thirds that will be ignored by the conversion.
  • Check out the user guide (access it through the link in the forum header bar) and learn when to stick to its recommendations and when going beyond improves your output.
  • Try variations of a small series of images. Use virtual copies to save drive space.

I use NLP 3.1.1 with Lightroom Classic 13.4 on macOS Sonoma. I tried LrC versions 14 and always fell back to LrC 13 for stable operations. In my case, it’s 13.4 - and all version newer than that (and I tested a few, but not all of them) had some ill effects in conjunction with NLP.

Hey thanks very much for your reply!

Actually I have used NLP for 2 years. After some testing I am pretty sure the crash is caused by roll analysis. I usually shoot color negatives and always select roll analysis mode. I like this mode. The NLP never crashed when I was using EPSON scanner.
Recently I have shifted to digitalizing using GFX100s. At the beginning the NLP worked fine for several rolls of color negatives. However, a week ago when I was processing a roll of Ektar 100 120 film the NLP started to crash after the convert. I pressed the shortcut “Ctrl+N” to call NLP but it didn’t pop up. The crash happens too when processing unconverted (the dialogue window showing NLP is processing but it crashes at one step near the end) after the first crash.

I read several threads about the failure to call NLP but it seems my trouble is new.

I am now processing color negatives using non-roll analysis mode. Hope you could find out what is going wrong and fix it!
