Can't get hotkey working in LR 6 (Windows)

I have NegativeLabHotkey running in the background, but when I do “ctr alt n” inside LR I get the dialog to create a new folder and not Negative Lab Pro. Lightroom was set up as English language, so no issue there. Also, if I do “ctr alt n” on my WIndows 10 desktop nothing happens, so it is not a command I have set up in Windows. How do I fix this?

Try ctrl-n instead of ctrl-alt-n

Can you go to “help > system info” and copy/paste that information? You can PM those details if you want.

Also, can you confirm that the hotkey program is actually running in the background? In Windows 10, on the bottom right system toolbar, click the “^” symbol to show background processes, and you should see a green “H” like shown here:


Note that if you simply run the hotkey program, it will not stay running after you restart your computer unless you have placed the program into the startup folder, following the directions to do this in the guide.


It is running in background. I made sure of that and I also made it a startup item also to make sure it always runs. Attached is my system info.

Thanks Gary - I’ve just tried on a setup environment to yours, and I have NOT been able to replicate the issue you are having.

  1. Make sure that Lightroom is the active window, and that you are on the Develop or Library module.
  2. Make sure the main Negative Lab Pro plugin is installed (you should be able to see it available as an option in Lightroom under “file > plugin extras > Negative Lab Pro”
  3. Make sure that at least one image is selected
  4. Make sure that the hotkey is running in the background
  5. Press and hold in exact order: Control + Alt + N

It is likely that one of those things above is not happening correctly. If you feel you are doing all of this correctly and still getting the error, it may be helpful if you could make a quick video of the issue happening and either share it here or email me at

Thanks @garycal01 - I do see now that on LR 6, the default shortcut for “Control+Alt+N” will produce a new folder. If the hotkey is running properly, though, it will override this default (which is what it does in my tests). If the hotkey is not running properly (or is being blocked by antivirus software, for example), it would then go back to the default.

I would try exiting out of the hotkey (right-click, exit) and restarting it. Take screenshots if you get any kind of warnings when you run it. If you have any kind of anti-virus, check to make sure that it isn’t blocking it.

Thanks. I have ensured all virus software is disabled, exited out of hotkey and restarted it, then restarted LR6. Still get the same result: “ctrl+alt+n” still creates a new folder and does not get NegLabPro going. Guess I will just have to launch Neg Lab Pro the manual way.

I have same problem. I even tried edit NegativeLabHotkey.ahk but nothing works. Program is running on background (Win10). My OS language is Czech, but LR (whole CC) in English, could this be a problem?

It’s a flaw in the program. Hopefully he fixes it because it’s a real pain in the neck starting it from the menu.

The problem are the existing hotkeys in your local language in LR, for example, Control + Alt + N is used in German from LR. Downloaded AutoHotKey, took nate’s script, changed the hotkey to Alt + X (not used from LR in German), complie to .exe, put it to autostart and now the hotkey Alt + X works.


I have the same problem. Control + Alt + N gives nothing. Not a single change.

Now I reinstalled everything using the link: Guide | Negative Lab Pro and I have hotkeys. Amazing!
